What are Field Targets 06.11.10

Field Target is a game played with air rifles and pistols in which various representations of typical air gun quarry are shot at random distances from 10 to 55 yards.  The targets are designed with a hole in the face and a paddle behind the hole.  The targets will fall when a shot pellet goes through the hole and hits the paddle.  The target will not fall, however, if the pellet only hits the face of the target.  A point is awarded only when the target falls.

In addition to make things more interesing, the size of the hole (kill-zone) also varies from 3/8" to over 2" in diameter.  The combination of distance and kill-zone size can make for something easy to quite difficult.

How Arimo Field Targets are different 06.11.10

When I shot my first field target match, there was a particular target that that had a 3/8" kill-zone but the critter seemed much too large to justify such a small hole.  My thought at the time was that the kill-zone should match the critter size.  There appear to be enough targets available with larger faces for the larger kill-zones, but no really small critters for the small kill-zones.  I, therefore, designed my first targets to be small critters in correlation to small kill-zones.

The other thing that I have noticed after shooting a few matches was that a pellet stike would remove a good portion of the paint on the targets.  This requires that the targets be repainted after every match, or sometimes in the middle of a larger match.  Too, the paint schemes often are not realistic in appearance, mainly because of the time it takes to repaint with care.

Arimo Field Targets are made to represent small critters (currently a Mouse, English sparrow, and Pocket Gopher) that are close to actual size.  These faces are also finished with the natural oxides that form when steel is heated which create a more durable finish and a more relalistic coloring.  The finish has proven to leave only a small spot of lead when shot that cleans off with bore solvent and light rubbing with a bronze brush without removing the underlying oxide layer.  In addition, multiple hits do not detract from the visual effect, unlike a painted target.

Coming Soon: Garden Snail 07.29.10

I now have a design for a Garden Snail target. The critter size is quite small which will limit the kill-zone size to 3/8" or smaller. The first hand cut-out one was just shipped to a customer and the production plasma cut ones I expect by the end of the first week in August.
